What is legionella?Contamination with the Legionella bacterium can only take place through the lungs by inhaling fine drops of water (aerosols or mist). Legionella bacteria mostly occur in water pipes. The bacterium multiplies quickly in still, hot water (25°c - 45°c). Such a situation can particularly arise in the pipe systems of large buildings, but also in air-conditioning systems. Subsequently, if the water is atomized and inhaled, contamination can arise. The chance for contamination is greatest under the shower. Especially elderly people and people with weakened immune systems run a risk. The symptoms vary from a fever to pneumonia. In approx. 15% of the cases the disease has a deadly outcome. |
